Jul. 13th, 2008 @ 01:33 pm Port Orchard Man Missing
Current Mood: worried
Gordon Janssen of Port Orchard disappeared yesterday after dropping a group of exchange students off on a shopping trip in downtown Portland. He told the group he was going to go park in a local city park and take a nap. He never returned to pick them up.

There has been a ping on cell phone in the area of 407 Broadway in Portland it says his phone is within 1.4 miles of this tower.

The bus is a 1998 Neoplan Cityliner. It's 40 ft long and painted white with turquoise lettering and says Janssens Tours on the side.

If seen please call the Portland police or dial 911.

Please pass this on.

To me, this man will always be a legend. His power of observation and ability to see things in everyday society that we overlook are what kept him relevant.

Here's one of my favorite bits from him:

This is pissing me off. Client hasn't payed me for the work I did for her, and I'm scrambling trying to get money for necessities. At this point, it looks like it'll be Monday before I see any money.

I haven't eaten in two days, and haven't been able to get out to get to the store to get anything either.

I have no idea what I'm going to do. I really don't.

I've been having a lot of fun with the demo for Spore Creature Creator. So much so that I took the store credit I had left at Gamespot and used it to get the full version, which I should have at some point today.

I made a little short video using the creator, which features Youtube integration so you can upload short (around 2 minute) videos of your creatures right from the client. Pretty neat use of features, and all of the content for the game (races, etc) will be primarily user generated.

While I may not always have agreed with him, he was actually pretty good on Meet The Press... especially his more recent interview with Barack Obama, which I particularly enjoyed.

He set a lot of landmarks in his 20+ years as a broadcaster. Definitely a talent that will be missed.

Fuck.

I swear if it's not one thing it's another.

First I break my cellphone today, and now my glasses broke to the point they can't be repaired.

Even worse, I don't have any money at my disposal to get new glasses, so I'm kinda screwed.

I can see somewhat decently without them, but it's going to make it a pain to be able to do anything at all regarding making money.

May. 20th, 2008 @ 09:12 am Something that'll make a lot of Doctor Who fans and haters of Russell T. Davies happy
Russell T Davies announces he will step down as executive producer of Doctor Who following the 4 specials to air in 2009, and will be succeeded by Steven Moffat

Personally I'm glad to see Moffat chosen to succeed him. He wrote the excellent "Blink" from last season as well as other episodes of the series, and his episodes always stood out as being true to the spirit of the original Doctor Who, moreso than anything else that's been done in the series so far.

Davies, however, has to be given credit for modernizing Doctor Who, but that's really the only part of his involvement with Doctor Who I'm really proud of.

Rory Root, the owner of Comic Relief in Berkley, California passed away a little while ago. I'm still having difficulty processing this because this man set an example of how comics shop owners should treat their customers. He was always doing everything he could to look out for the little guy, and nobody ever had a bad word to say about him. I never got a chance to meet him, but every interaction I had with him online, from the days of the Warren Ellis forum to The Engine, he was always great to talk to. He's definitely someone whose name I'll miss seeing around online.

Burn Notice
May. 3rd, 2008 @ 01:01 am Iron Man (non-spoiler review)
IRON MAN (PG-13): Starring Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark), Gwyneth Paltrow (Virginia "Pepper" Potts), Terrence Howard (Jim "Rhodey" Rhodes), Jeff Bridges (Obadiah Stane).

Totally blows away any other superhero movie out there, in my opinion. As someone who's a die-hard Iron Man fan, I had absolutely no problems with the changes made to the source material.

The nice thing about Iron Man is you can do that and still keep him relevant. Robert Downey Jr. was dead on as Tony Stark. He balanced the playboyesque nature of the character and infused him with a very infectious charm. He plays really well off Gwyneth Paltrow, who was surprisingly good as Pepper Potts. I was really worried about her, particularly because she's not one of my favorite actresses, but she really brought a great energy and vibrance to the character, and plays well off Downey's Tony Stark.

Next up is Terrence Howard as Jim "Rhodey" Rhodes. He definitely was great in the role, playing well with the military aspect of the character (which wasn't something he was originally, but it works well here) and his friendship with Tony Stark.

Last but not least is Jeff Bridges as Obadiah Stane. This was really my only complaint, because the nature of his character isn't as developed as it should be, and leads to a somewhat disappointing climax in the film, but the movie doesn't really suffer as a result.

As far as the suit and the visual effects go? Spot on. I really had a hard time telling what was CGI and what wasn't, and my hat goes off to Stan Winston Studios and ILM for really pulling out all the stops. Also, props go to Adi Granov for his awesome design of the Mark III red and gold suit. It's a sleek, workable design that is very modern and realistic.

What I liked most about this film was that Jon Favreau clearly paid attention to what the fans wanted in an comic book film and took it seriously. Everything about the film has those nice little details that make you appreciate how much work went into making it. Other comic book based films (including The Dark Knight and The Incredible Hulk) are going to have a hard time topping this one.

Overall, I'd say I give the movie 4.5 out of 5 stars, and the main reason being Bridges and the end battle really kind of disappointed me, but I still really enjoyed the movie.
